What Are Load Cell Seals and How Do They Work? The Scale People

We’ve talked about load cells a lot in previous blogs. Load cells are essentially the inner workings of a scale or balance that actually allow for the measurement of weight. Load cells are often quite fragile and require a great deal of care to ensure that they are fully functional and working properly. With all that being said, there are also a few accessory pieces that can help protect and prolong the average life of load cells. One of those accessories is load cell seals. Want to learn everything about load cell seals? Look no further than this blog!

What are Load Cell Seals?

Load cell seals play an important role in protecting the load cells inside of a scale or balance. Since load cells are so fragile and easily broken, they are often covered away inside of specially designed load cell seals. Without load cell seals, the load cells inside are at a much larger risk of being affected by shock loading, which can increase false measurement rates. In addition, there are many different types of load cell seals. The following are three of the most common.

Hermetically Sealed Load Cell Seals

Hermetically sealed load cell seals are best used in scales or balances that have a tendency to get wet or place in moist conditions. For example, the truck weighs station scales, especially in areas where rainfall is common, and can benefit from hermetically sealed load cells because of their ability to deflect water and protect the load cells inside. It’s usually a more expensive option, but it’s a must-have for your balance or scale if it will frequently be coming in contact with humidity, moisture, or liquids.

Environmental Seals

This type of seal has to do with protecting the load cells from potentially harmful external factors such as dust, mild humidity, and dirt. They usually consist of potting a cavity near the strain gauge and then using washers or O rings to further protect the fragile wiring around the potting of the cell. Environmental seals are almost always used in outdoor settings where weather and debris cannot be adequately controlled.

Welded Seal Load Cells

Lastly, there are welded seal load cells, which are very similar in structure to hermetical load seals, but with different levels of protection. For example, the wiring of welded seals is set up differently than hermetical seals, therefore altering the protection level. Welded load cell seals are recommended for scales or balances that may occasionally get wet or encounter debris, but not on a regular.
