Four Ways Of Taking Proper Care of Certified Test Weights

Hence, you want to verify your equipment is working after the weight adjusts to the same temperature as the balance.

No matter the weighing instrument or application used, test weights are necessary. Ideally, proper weights ensure traceability, accuracy, and reliability gathered from a scale or balance. Test weights are something to invest in and must be taken care of properly to remain functional. Here are four ways of taking proper care of test weights.

Check The Temperature

It is essential to evaluate if the temperature differs between the weight and the balance. Hence, you want to verify your equipment is working after the weight adjusts to the same temperature as the balance. Checking the temperature can help avoid making mistakes, especially if you’re working in a lab.

Gently Handle Test Weights with Care

Wear gloves or use tweezers to help protect the surface from gathering fingerprints, dirt, lint, etc. Our hands tend to leave behind oils or grease, affecting mass readings during measurements and causing permanent damage to the weight due to corrosion.

You should handle larger test weights gently as well. Secondly, check that the cloth or gloves used to handle weights don’t have lint or loose material that could get on the weights.

How To Properly Clean Test Weights

If by any chance, dust or fingerprints end up on the calibration weight, you can use a soft brush to remove them before you start the verification process. However, do not touch the bristles with your bare hands. Also, make sure to clean the brush regularly and thoroughly before and after use.

Store Weights In a Case

To protect anything from damaging calibration weights, you want to store it in a protective lined case. The smallest of dust particles can affect weight results that are on highly sensitive balances.

The case is intended to hold weights and should be kept free of any particles. Additionally, you want to make sure to keep test weights separated during storage or transport.  You also want to ensure weights are stored in a stable environment.  Temperature fluctuation can impact the smaller of the weights.

Annual Certification or Verification of Weights

Always have your calibration company verify or calibrate the weights being used are accurate.  The Scale People offers on and off-site weight verification and can also provide ISO calibration of weights for all weight classes.  Doing this annually is critical to maintaining your weight.
