The Importance of Daily Weight Checks Using Test Weights

Daily weight checks help ensure proper weighing function.

You must have suitable scales if you want accurate weight measurements of laboratory samples. For instance, you may use an analytical balance to weigh the lab samples correctly. The precision and accuracy of the results depend on the weighing system’s reliability. Also, daily weight checks help ensure proper weighing function. It can quickly identify weighing problems and prevent improper weighing and waste of products.

Significance of Daily Weight Checks Using Test Weights

You must complete the suitable precautions and abide by the standard operating procedures to ensure your reports’ reliability.

Calibrate the Analytical Balance

First of all, always calibrate the analytical balance at all times. Samples are constantly weighed against the standard reference weights. So, the laboratory must maintain a set of certified standard weights. Also, keep the balance calibrated using the standard calibration procedures against daily, weekly, and monthly schedules. Remember never to touch the standard weights with your hands.

Ensure the Appropriate Environment

Make sure to complete daily weight checks in a vibration-free environment. The balances should be in an area with controlled temperature and humidity. They should not be under sunlight since it can trigger temperature changes inside the weighing chamber. In addition, weigh the samples only after closing the weighing chamber doors.

Handle the Weights Adequately

Avoid touching the weights with your bare hands when completing daily weight checks using test weights. This can produce errors in the readings. Instead, use a pair of clean forceps to place the samples in the center of the pan. Then, keep them inside the slots   in the weight box and close them. This minimizes environmental exposure.

Moreover, wear gloves when handling heavy weights. Please don’t allow them to slip on the balance pans because constant rubbing can wear down the pans’ base. This will decrease their mass and impact the weighing readings. Ensure they don’t bump against hard items.

Place the Weights in the Right Way

Always place the weights in an area free of dust, corrosive gases, and moisture. The mass of the weights will increase if the weights are rusty or dusty. Therefore, leading to inaccurate readings. After utilizing the weights, store them inside a desiccator to keep them dry.

Complete the Right Measures for Sample Weighing

Lastly, utilize a clean spatula of the proper size to place the sample. Allow the readings to stabilize before you record them. It would be best if you also took extra precautions to weigh small amounts of samples. For example, use disposable head caps and gloves to prevent hair fall and breath from impacting the reading.
