High-Resolution Weighing in Explosive Environments

High-Resolution Weighing in Explosive Environments

There are some critical facts about high-resolution weighing within explosive environments that you should know.

After expanding its wide range of petrochemical products, SABIC found out that the weighing system of its batching hoppers needed to be corrected for its increased production schedule. There are some critical facts about high-resolution weighing within explosive environments that you should know. SABIC required two distinct weighing solutions for existing and new batching hoppers placed in different hazardous areas. Besides ATEX certification, Mineabea Intec provided high weighing resolution and weighing data transfer to safer areas. Applications

The application has required ATEX-certified load cells as primary replacements for not suitable components of batching and other storage hoppers. Some products used include:

  • Load cells PR 6241
  • Mounting kits PR 6143
  • Remote display PR 5110
  • Load cells PR 6201

Top Benefits for the Customer

Some of the main benefits for the customer are:

  • Approval or certificate for hazardous areas according to the ATEX available
  • Proven, durable product quality for complex and challenging environments. Enhanced and improved operation using the newer remote display with installation compliant for hazardous areas
  • Quick, secured, and dependable transmission of weighing data

Project Goals and Other Implementations

After expanding its wide range of products to include basic chemicals, polymers, polycarbonates, fertilizers, and metals, SABIC contacted potential suppliers looking for two specific solutions. These were a weighing system used for a batching hopper used to produce polyethylene granulate additives and then the replacement of a competitor’s defective weighing components in twelve different granule hoppers. Minebea Intec was picked for its devices’ accuracy, safety, and reliability standards. In the first instance, the new hopper was to be installed in an outside space that required the usage of Group II and Category 2G equipment in accordance with the ATEX directive. On top of compliance with mandatory standards, the customer required a set readability of 100 g and the placement of any weighing electronics at a far distance of 500 m from the hopper. A hopper usually weighs 523 kg in total with a large net capacity of 60kg. To help achieve the desired resolution with an unfavorable ratio of dead load to weighing capacity, the system had to have registered a change.
