Have you ever wondered how scales actually measure weight? A load cell essentially is the means of measuring the weight that scales use. Load cells actually measure the weight of whatever they need to weigh by calculating the stressor applied force of the object on the scale. Weight is actually calculated using the age-old physics formula of calculating force (mass x gravity). The more you know! Precision load cells differ from normal load cells due to their innate ability to calculate down to the smallest decimal for accuracy, an important trait to have for industrial product batching purposes. 

Common Errors with Precision Load Cells

Although precision load cells are made with accuracy in mind, there is always a risk of error when it comes to scales. Most of the time, there is an increase of error when the weight or load limit is exceeded by the item or batch being measured. This can lead to many structural problems with load cells, especially the much more delicate precision load cells. When over-weighed, scales can develop many problems, but most notably hysteresis and non-linearity. When these two types of errors combine, they can cause a critical error which can only be amended by using a mathematical equation known as accuracy class which will determine the skew. However, not over-weighing and performing precision load cells and overall scale maintenance every so often can drastically reduce the risk of errors.
